review 1: I immediately picked this up after finishing The Anvil of the World as it is a prequel that details the history of The Master of the Mountain and The Saint of the World. Though it wasn't as funny or tongue in cheek as The Anvil of the World, I still enjoyed this novel. I was especially found of Gard's detour into the acting world (of course he would be the perfect Dark Lord!) as I am of most of Baker's detours (my all-time favorite being her discussion of the 1916 D.W. Griffith silent film Intolerance in Mendoza in Hollywood).
review 2: A great, absorbing read with really fascinating changes in tone -- one moment dark fantasy, the next witty and satirical humour. The humour came as a surprise and relief to me, since nothing about it was telegraphed by the cov... moreer art or blurb (though the back copy did perfectly spoil pretty much every major plot element, so if you can avoid reading it, do). I could have done without a particular device near the end, and for that I'm knocking off a star (it really annoyed and distracted me through much of the denouement); but until then it would have been five stars throughout. If you wish your quest-style epic fantasy had a bit more darkness and grey-area ethics, but also a wee teaspoon of the kind of humour usually reserved for modern-setting urban fantasy, you'll breeze through this one. I'm looking forward to reading the author's back catalogue and wish I'd discovered her earlier. less
