review 1: Book 2 in the Hurst Amulet series.William and Marcail were lovers years ago, but Marcail tossed William aside supposedly for a lover who was better placed in society and with more money. Now she needs his help to get free of a blackmailer.William is trying to help free his brother from kidnappers and Marcail has stolen the artifact the kidnappers have demanded as his ransom. This was a nice love story with some adventure getting the two former lovers back together.
review 2: I enjoyed the book as the story was fairly fast paced and the characters likable overall. As the norm with romances, I was more than willing to overlook the seemingly impossible coincidences and good luck of the main characters (not to mention strange plot devices like having everyone trav
... moreel all over the British Isle just to hand off a blackmail payment between two parties who both live in London!), but I did get frustrated with the confusing timeline. SPOILERS: For a long time, it wasn't clear how long ago the H/H were first together, some references made it sound like only 2 years, but the author does later clarify it was 8 years. We also are never told how old William is in the present (Marcail is 27), but both main characters are repeatedly referred to as young during their previous relationship, and there is a reference to him being a “new captain” at the time. That said, the first page states that William has been a captain of his own ship for 15 years. Also, from the first book in the series, there is a huge hurry to get the artifact to Egypt to rescue William’s brother, yet the two take time at the end of the story to get married and for her to finish the run of a play? There is mention in that epilogue that Erroll has a falling-out with his cousin “several months before,” which would support that a lot of time had taken place before the wedding as that happened at the end of the first book, which should have only been a week or two before the action started in this story. Maybe I am missing something?? My other issue is that the book states that William is the only man Marcail has ever been with. Based on how his character is portrayed, I have trouble believing he would “court” a woman he was in love with for 6 months – during which time he took her virginity – without there being a discussion of marriage, actress or not. less
