review 1: "«Mary, tu sei il mio futuro. Possiamo incominciarlo oggi stesso?»
review 2: On Monday I attempted to read a more serious and worthy volume from my gloriously large to-read pile, but the way my day progressed highlighted that I was in need of some simple escapism this week, so I picked up One Night in Scotland. Aaaaaand it was fine, it certainly offered me escapism, but there were enough moments to make me seriously consider giving this two stars.Starting with the grumbles: this book had all the subtlety of a brick. I liked the beginning, introducing Mary on a stormy night in Scotland, barging her way into a local pub and not really giving a damn what anyone thought. But as soon as the heroine clapped eyes on the hero, I found myself getting annoyed - abrupt, info-dump thoughts and feelings are quickly thrust down our throats and this sadly did not relent as the book wore on. And whilst I really liked the overarching story of Mary's attempt to rescue her brother, the actual events in the book don't really add up to much. The Earl's refusal to believe Mary or let her go was fun at first, but quickly wore on my nerves, and nothing much really happens beyond this initial set-up, which was a shame.Ultimately, I think I have been spoiled by writers like Eloisa James, who manage to maintain subtlety, especially when it comes to past hurts, secrets, thoughts and feelings. Yet for all my grumpy comments, I did enjoy this book and it made me grin more than once. And I am mighty curious about the Hurst Amulet - enough to pick up the next book in the series. less
