review 1: So. There was actually NOT a whole lot of jamming (like 2 or 3 recipes) or pickling (same) going on in this book. Which would have been a bummer if I had not checked out 3 or 4 other canning books at the same time. What I DID love about this book was that there were recipes for other good, well, cooking projects. From farmers cheeses (yummy!!) to yogurt to homemade pasta (of the ravioli sort) and lots of other projects that really make you look like you know your way around the kitchen.LOVE that everything I wanted to try (I was not curing anything) was doable with standard kitchen stuff - ie, didn't need to buy a cheesemaking kit, or a dehydrator, or...Love that there were recipes to use the creations in.Super easy read with yummy good stuff to try. I would check it ou... moret again (probably wouldn't buy it) so that's the 4 instead of a 5.
review 2: I would give this 5 stars, except I haven't made anything from it yet, so will hold off and update after I have. I did sit down and read the entire thing, cover-to-cover immediately upon coming home from the library with it.Totally accessible and designed to make seemingly daunting and difficult cooking projects very simple, this book is written for regular folks wanting to try their hand at making everything from your own condiments ( from ketchup to compound butter), to smoking fish and meat, making your own pasta, candy and so much more. Truly it made me want to hit the kitchen and start making stuff right *now*. But where to start??In the interest of full disclosure, Karen is a groovy local gal whom I've met and really like interacting with in the social media space around food swapping, preserving and more. This has in no way influenced my assessment of this most excellent cookbook though. Can't wait to pick up her latest as well: Can It, Bottle It, Smoke It. Yay! less
