review 1: Knausgaard has already won me over. The first book was great, the second completely mesmerized me. Still, I was apprehensive at best about Boyhood, thinking that the topic would veer too close to the less fascinating themes of the first volume rather than the second. I should not have feared. He spares no punches in describing himself as an arrogant, delicate, almost entirely unlikeable child, one so oblivious to basic interactions with others that he is able to torment other children without realizing. And still. His passages about the brutally abusive nature of living with his father, his rapturous depictions of being a soccer-loving, girl-obsessed preteen in 70s Norway, all of it is so detailed and mundane and specific that even if the topics are not universal, his insi... moreght into his behavior makes it all seem perfectly rational and tangible. The books aren't perfect, but they are wildly compelling.Waiting a year for volume 4 to be translated will be dreadful.
