review 1: DiCamillo, K. (2013) Flora and ulysses: the illuminated adventures. New York, NY: Candlewick Press.Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures is a wonderful fiction book that includes a mix of comic book like illustrations that help tell the story along with the text. The story begins with a comic book enthusiast Flora, who rescues a squirrel and resuscitates him after he is sucked up by a powerful vacuum. Once the squirrel returns to his normal state he begins to display unusual behavior such as he can understand human language, fly, and write poetry on a typewriter. Flora decides to name him Ulysses and begins to think he has been turned into a superhero. This book is recommended for middle school students and anyone above that. It explores the themes of adventure, co... moremedy and an unbreakable bond between a squirrel and a girl. I could use this book in my classroom to help students learn about what it takes to win a New Berry award. For this I could have them look up the criteria pertaining to New Berry books and have them discuss these elements.
review 2: What was Di Camillo and the ALA thinking! First of all, the vocabulary is WAY to high for kids to understand. Even the more advance students would struggle with words such as malfeasance and cynic which appear multiple times throughout the story. Secondly, the short, choppy chapters give readers whiplash. Finally, the overall story is unappealing, not just to me but to my students as well. They don't get it and frankly, neither do I. less
