review 1: This book is a fun, adventurous book about a chicken looking for danger and excitement in its life. The adventures are divided into three stories. I think if it were one long adventure, the author could have used more elements to develop the plot and engage the reader; however, because it was divided into three parts, the plot of each adventure is short and underdeveloped. There is no obvious climax, but the chicken resolves the issue of going on adventures by not going on one. Teachers can use this book maybe to read to children in different parts. Have the children infer what will happen to the chicken. I think the illustrations are beautiful, though: full of color and moves from one page to another.
review 2: The author was recently named National Ambassador... more for Young People’s Literature, and I decided to check out some of her books after watching an interview with her. This book is about Louise, a chicken with a mind of her own and a taste for wandering, but enough sense to know when to go back home. I recommended it to both of my daughters to buy for nieces/nephews/friends' children. Children as young as about three with a good sense of humor would enjoy this, and it would be a fun first "chapter book" for children a few years older. Wonderful illustrations, too. less
