review 1: Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo is about hope, love, and friendship and reveals that it is important to believe. Living in a world that has been turned “upside down” as her parents are divorced, Flora is a cynic, has no hope, and is always prepared for the worst. The tables turn after Flora befriends Ulysses, a squirrel with hidden powers, and is pulled into an adventure on a race to vanquish evil. Not wanting her daughter to be friends with a squirrel, Flora’s mother threatens to kill Ulysses. It is then that Flora feels the need to have hope in Ulysses. Defying her former beliefs, Flora goes in search for Ulysses. I liked Flora and Ulysses because Kate DiCamillo took a serious theme and made it a fun and humorous tale. For example, I liked how the author has a ... moregiven a twist to a classic superhero story by making Flora a hero. Secondly, I liked how the author portrayed the characters. For instance, the author described Flora’s father so that readers could understand his personality. Flora and Ulysses is a heart-warming read that I recommend to all middle schoolers.
review 2: This fiction story is full of fantasy and personification. This is a fun story of a girl and her friend squirrel Ulysses. This story is full of fun suspense about what is going to happen to Ulysses. Flora and Ulysses go through some challenging time to remain friends. The author takes the squirrel and gives him powers which is an added plus to the adventurous flora and Ulysses experience. The comic strips and illustration in the story add attraction to the story and helps the read picture what they are reading. I would recommend this story for pre-teens and teenagers. less
