review 1: Summary and Critique: Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo is a story of an adventurous chicken named Louise. She is discontented with her henhouse and goes on several journeys around the world in search of excitement. She sails on a pirate ship, performs in the circus, and mingles with an exotic fortune teller. Though Louise enjoys her adventures, she learns to appreciate her safe and warm henhouse. DiCamillo uses extensive dialogue to tell the tale of one troubled chicken and develop Louise’s character. She also styles text in a visually appealing manner, that follows the storyline. I thought this was a well-written children's book because of the different literally styles DiCamillo integrates into the story. Definitely keeps you on your toes while rea... moreding it. Classroom Use: ForeshadowingRead the first and the beginning of the second chapters and then have students guess what will happen next using foreshadowing. Allow each student to write his or her idea.Three Ways to ReadFirst, have students read through the book only looking a the pictures and infer what Louise is doing on each of her adventures. Next, read the words of the story. Finally, have students retell the story to classmates.Personal ConnectionsAsk students write about a personal experience where they felt dissatisfied and what they tried to do to fix it. Did their solutions work? Did they, like Louise, come to appreciate their lives more?Genre: Adventure Format: Picture book with textReading Level: Kindergarten- 3rd gradeTheme/topic: Courage, hero, bravery Gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status: None were included in this picture book, it was about chickensCitation: DiCamillo, K., & Weise, C.
