review 1: Holy bagumba! Kate DiCamillo has quickly become one of my most favorite authors, children's or otherwise, since I started reading her books a few months ago. Her writing is deeply human. A celebration of the large concealed within the small. In a children's book that concerns itself with a superhero squirrel one would expect more cartoon action, a bank heist or an alien invasion, but that's not Mrs. DiCamillo's style. Instead, we are treated to a cast of quirky, unforgettable characters, all delightfully emotionality real who learn through their shared experiences to feel the beating of their own feelings within their hearts.

In the first half, they were always begging for one more chapter at the end of reading time, but they lost interest about halfway through. We finished, but only because I was picking the book. I liked the squirrel and his poetry, the way the comic book elements merged seamlessly into the text, its quirkiness, and its message of the value of hope and love, even if it means you might be let down.I thought her use of advanced vocabulary was too heavy handed. Don't get me wrong. I'm an SAT tutor, so I appreciate it when authors can use sophisticated vocabulary with children, but there is a certain threshold where the book just feels like a vocabulary primer, and this book crossed that threshold for me. I also thought the story simply lost momentum halfway through. It didn't have the same magic and appeal of the first half. This isn't as good as her other books, but still fun. less
