review 1: Interesting historical fiction. Set in British Ruled Colonial Malay right before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Japanese invasion of Malaysia and Singapore. Rubber and Tea plantations and the wealthy Brits who lived like royalty. Also a love story = a wealthy planters wife who learns she really doesn't want all the benefits of money- or the confines of her very British existence. As the invasion and war move ever closer, she learns what's really important in her life.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book and all the characters in it. It was a pleasant surprise because I just picked it really quickly in a hurry one day. It gives a really interesting perspective on World War II in the Far East. I'm not sure if it didn't get a bit farcical in the end but i... moret was still a really good read. I love all the characters and really have a vision of them in my minds eye - this would make a great film and I just love the main character Connie (and secretly want to be her!). This book makes me want to have a travel adventure some day...that's what books are for! less
