review 1: A very lovely book. The illustrations (acrylic on Bristol board) are simple, with vivid colors and interesting texture. My favorite aspect of the illustrations were the "Actual Size" depictions of a shoe and clove on the flyleaf. I must admit, I held the book down next to my foot to compare. The type is a bit small and bland for my taste. I was glad to see a source note at the back with a photograph of the real Ella Ewing. As for the story itself, I would like to say that one of my favorite things in the world is seeing tall women wearing high heels. Though calling the eponymous Ella Kate a tall woman is something of an understatement, I enjoy seeing women being empowered to take up space in the world. Though I imagine Ella Kate did not always feel powerful, the aut... morehors demonstrate her remarkable savvy and independence in a manner which ultimately constructs the idea that what makes us different is often what makes us the most special.
review 2: This lovely collaboration from the Klise Sisters gives a little-known heroine her place in the sun. Ella Kate Ewing lived with gigantism and her 8'4" height made her stand out in several ways. This version of her story focuses on a loving family who accept and encourage their exceptionally tall daughter. Readers will feel Ella's pain at being called names, and her excitement to be showcased in traveling shows. Ella Kate was able to earn good money and keep her dignity at the same time. (And it's clear that her dignity came from within.) Although Ella Kate made the best of her life, the Author's Note left me feeling sad for this remarkable woman. The artwork is bright and period-appropriate with lots of details. This book could be a good conversation starter between parent and child about people who are physically "different" and how they might feel, ways to accept everyone etc.. less
