review 1: Messner, Kate, and Andy Rash. Sea monster's first day. San Francisco, Calif.: Chronicle Books, 2011. Print. It's Ernest's first day of school. Fun school activities await him--singing songs, fieldtrips, storytelling, etc.--but so do challenges. Making friends isn't always easy, but when you're a sea monster like Ernest, fitting in can be extra difficult. This book would be an entertaining and comforting read for the first few days of school in a K-1 setting. Ernest the giant sea monster is a character that has no difficulty appealing to all students in these grades, and many of the challenges he encounters --fish tease him, he's not good at playing their games, etc.--and the fun activities he experiences--singing, recess, lunch, field trips--help prepare students for life a... moret school. Additionally, the story offers a great lesson in that Ernest meets all his difficulties with creativity, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
review 2: Even big guys can have a rough time starting school, as Ernest the sea monster shows us. Starting school and learning how everything works is a tough job: there’s so much to learn and do, and something always seems to go wrong. “It felt like everybody was already part of a group.” But Ernest has a positive attitude and keeps trying to make friends. “Finally, at lunch, I spotted some fish that looked a little like me. I decided it was worth a try. We hit it off right away.” Kids will love the bright, goofy illustrations of Ernest and the other fish, with their big goggly eyes and funny expressions. Messner achieves a balance between acknowledging that the first day of school isn’t easy, and sharing the message that a positive attitude goes a long way. She accomplishes this through gentle humor in this upbeat story about making friends. less
