Marty McGuire
review 1: Abi read this in about a day. She loved it and thought it was really funny. She loved that Marty, the 3rd grade female protagonist, wasn't afraid to hold the frog. I have no idea what that references, but she loved it. This is a book on the "Chat-n-Chew" list for Abi's school (a PTA sponsored and facilitated program), so the third graders will discuss this book over lunch one month this school year. This is also on the Accelerated Reader list, and she loves taking the AR quizzes after she finishes books. The only reason this only received four stars from Abi is because she wished it was longer!
review 2: Marty McGuire by Kate Messner is a contemporary realistic fiction book written for elementary school kids aged 8-10. The book is about a young girl known as
... moreMarty McGuire who loves using her free time to catch frogs in the pond instead of playing with dolls and dress-up like all the other girls. So, as soon as her teacher gives Marty the princess role in a play they were acting in the class, she is immediately convinced that there has been a huge mistake. However, following a particular lecture in the art of creativeness, Marty creates her own idea to better the play, by proposing to use a live frog on stage rather than a stuffed animal frog (Kate, 2011). The book is given a 5 star rating for its creative plot and great development of characters. Personally, I had fun reading the book. Marty is portrayed as a strong personality who handles the challenges of altering friendships, interfering classmates along with the usual everyday drawbacks of being in the third grade. The book is appropriate for young readers, especially third graders because the content of the book is so relevant to their everyday experiences. The relationships of Marty with her parents, teachers and her peers is exceptionally practical and will have a positive impact on the readers. The book can be used to instill creativity in children. less

Great reAlistic character for early chapter book. Supportive, but not dominating, illustrations.
