review 1: This was a hot quick read Ian, the Earl of Westbrook is a half Indian Brit who spies for England. He is a rake of the highest order. He takes an assignment to flush out smugglers along the coast which leads him to Faith Pelly’s family home. He is an invited guest presumably to visit the oldest daughter who is looking to marry an aristocrat. Instead of being drawn to Margaret he is intrigued by Faith. Faith is an outgoing, opinionated and very curious woman. She discovers an erotic book and studies its pictures carefully. Ian catches her with the book which becomes an impetus to their relationship. He is willing to instruct her in the intimate arts and she agrees because she believes she will never marry although a good reason is never given for her belief and it was hard... more to imagine a virgin willing to engage in love play upon first meeting a man. The leads engage in a highly passionate affair and their emotions are fully engaged. Faith falls in love quickly with Ian (this took about a week) and he cares deeply for her but he is keeping secrets from her and this could damage their entire relationship. Faith is stubborn and in some ways too naïve when it comes to loyalty and honor. I found Ian charming and smart. I wish that this book was longer.
review 2: I read the novella from start to finish in one sitting. Overall, I was thoroughly entertained. I do have one major complaint. At times, I had no idea to whom in which the dialogue belonged. I would read over a passage several times, trying to decipher the owner of the dialogue. Often times, the dialogue of one of the MC would be buried in the action of the other MC. My point: there was NO he said, she said in the traditional sense. "Hi," Ian said. It only said Hi, and I had to decipher who was speaking. I highly recommend Kate Pearce to Historical Romance fans who are on the naughtier side. less
