review 1: It took me a while to get into this book; I just read a review where the reader gave up at pg 50, and gave it 1 star. This is why I persevered - and it paid off. I found the material so fascinating, it compelled me to keep reading. I didn't know this part of Japanese history, yet now I understand some of why modern society is the way it is. Hokusai's daughter: never heard of her. And yet I should have, by all accounts. (and it turns out I used to live in modern-day Yoshiwara!)

... moreint part of a master's work, and there are times when "the old man", as she calls him, has palsy and his work could only have been painted by her. It's an interesting piece of history showing even worse restrictions for women than the rest of the world at the time. The book IS a bit long... Lynnette less
