review 1: After a trip to Japan this was a great way to understand some of the history through an unknown artist. At first the opening was slow going however I started to wonder how this girl Oei will turn out. Hanging out with a geisha is an interesting way to start. Her strength grows especially after her first love. However like many she is bound by family and tries to preserve herself and create an identity of her own. Not easy ever and not in Japan even today. Understanding art in this way makes the paintings come alive and engages me to seek more on the woman, history and culture. I would highly encourage others to read this book because it makes you think and engages you to seek out more understanding and finally because I enjoy a good historical novel.
review 2:
... moreI do not know how to describe this book. The journey that Govier took me on was spectacular. Some instances wree slower than others but the book overall was one of the best I read all summer. It captures the reading making it impossible to put down. The time period is intersting because of all the challenges and hardships that the people went through. Following the protagionist's journey is great and later to just wtch her dissappear with time really held a deep meaning at the end. Additionally knowning that there is some truth in the book just makes it that much mmore of a great read. less
