review 1: Moving through the Caroline series, A Surprise for Caroline takes place at Christmas time. The Hathaways are still boarding with the Abbotts, as well as Caroline's aunt, uncle and cousin. Caroline has two girls to play with, as often feels left out. She is a couple years younger than Lydia and Rhonda. The older girls are more into fashion and hairstyles, and Caroline wants to do things like sledding and ice skating. Caroline tries to find ways for them to do things together, but nothing works out the way it seems. She ends up putting very one at risk when one of her ideas gets out of hand. What I really liked about this story, is although this story takes place 200 years ago, it shows how friendships can be strained when odd numbers and difference in tastes. Carolin... moree thinks that the older girls look down on her, but does not realize how she may be making them feel. A good story for girls 7-10 years old about growing up.
review 2: It's Christmastime and Caroline is excited to play winter games with her cousin, Lydia, and her friend, Rhonda, but is disappointed to find that they don't share her enthusiasm. With the help of some of the men that work at the shipyard, Caroline has a pair of ice skates custom made for Rhonda in hopes that she will take Caroline up on her offer to teach her how to ice skate. The gift doesn't quite go over as well as she would've hoped, but Caroline is determined to enjoy the season with her closest friends. During an afternoon spent outside playing a game of hoops, near tragedy strikes. When she chases after her missing hoop Caroline becomes stranded on a piece of ice. Her cousin Lydia shows incredible bravery and all girls return home safely. A great story with real action and also a relatable storyline about the difficulties of female friendship. Recommended for girls grades 3-5. less
