review 1: I didn't finish this book, but wonder if I should give it another try. It has some interesting things to offer- an alternate England in Victorian times, a young female scientist main character, a trip to an alternate India, magic and a quest for a supernatural flower with spiritual properties. Sounds like a good mix, right? After about 100 pages, I could put the book down and walk away and not care much about what happened next, and I suppose that's my litmus test right now. The main character is traveling across a thousand-mile bridge to get to Bharata(alternate India). A sea monster attacks! But I can't really picture the bridge, the travellers' caravan, or the sea monster very clearly. The writing is spare and somewhat detached. I think I needed something a littl... moree different to attach to the book. This is a perfectly fine book, well-written, it just didn't quite get me there.
review 2: 9/2013 I wanted to love this book, but I would only give it 2 1/2 if half points were allowed. I enjoyed the England/India contrast of cultures and the science/magic debate, but I hated the trite romance. I didn't like the Victorianish time period or many of the characters. Kenyon is a sci-fi writer and this book was her first attempt at fantasy. The book moved along at a good pace and there were multiple interesting story lines intertwined as part of the plot. Right and wrong was constantly in question which kept the characters from being strong heros but fit the idea of possibly merging the cultures of science and magic. less
