review 1: Not sure why I bothered with this - I'm not a huge fan of the show. The food is OK - lots of comfort staples, but almost everything is fried. I had hoped to get a good desert out of it, but while the recipes are OK, I've got them already, possibly in a better form (Texas sheet cake, anyone?). I had also hoped for more Cajun-inspired recipes. The potluck chapter is probably the most useful. The information on cooking game would also be handy if you have a hunter in the family. And the dedication to her daughters-in-law was touching, as were the very appropriate inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout. If you're a fan of the show, you really should check this out. Otherwise, I'd skip it - there are much better sources for LA-inspired recipes.
review 2: Got
... more it for Christmas and I was so surprised. It's shockingly good! It's charming, witty, religious, uplifting, easy-to-follow, and the recipes are downright delicious. I'll admit, I was expecting nothing but Squirrel Brains Stew, and there is a chapter on Wild Game Recipes (which look good, btw), but the rest is all good, hearty, normal Southern food. Already made the Spoon Butter Rolls, Roasted Beef & Vegetable Soup, and the Chocolate Pie --- all YUM! Can't wait to try the rest. Very happy if a cookbook can give me at least 3 to 5 good, solid recipes, and this one looks to have about 30! less
