review 1: This one was a bit underwhelming. After the end of the third volume, where then arrive triumphant at the lost city no one thought existed, I was expecting a bit more…I don’t know, excitement? But instead the cast is separated and a predictable conspiracy begins. The characters being separated is certainly something to worry over, but not enough to make this volume entertaining. All in all it was a disappointment.
review 2: I was surprised by this addition to the Amulet series only because Vol. 2 & Vol. 3 seemed to deal with surface level conflicts. They were lackluster compared to Vol. 1, which hooked me immediately. "The Last Council" was intriguing and unsettling - a reminder that there is something really sinister going on not just in the plot but in the
... more core of the Amulet world. I can't figure out what it is. It's like seeing something out of the corner or your eye and then turning your head only to find there's nothing there. For instance, Emily's stone gives her great power and responsibility, but when it speaks to her, there is something creepy and clawing about it. It can't be good - like the one ring in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Kibuishi's ability to maintain this unsettling mysteriousness will keep me reading the next volumes. less
