review 1: A mystery that is confusing, to say the least. I keep getting lost in the confusing array of characters. It does not help that he switches settings and characters repeatedly within the same chapter by simply starting a new paragraph. It takes 5 os 6 sentences for the reader to realize that you are in a different setting and set of characters. So many words so little information. The book could have been one fourth as long and still covered the basic plot. It was so lack-luster that I abandoned it with only 50 pages left to completion. I really no longer cared how it was going to end.
review 2: I borrowed another of my Mom's FirstReads wins. The author and series were both new to me, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to discover them both. The plot centers arou... morend two Swedish police officers following two cases -- one revolving around a mysterious disappearance; the other a possible domestic violence situation. I found both stories and both police officers intriguing, and enjoyed going back and forth between the two plots. I have to give a slight edge to the case involving the female officer but did like them both. The book does not end with a tidy resolution. While that can be frustrating, I like when a book ends that way sometimes since it's more realistic to me that way. After reading the interview with the author and the discussion questions at the end, I was even more interested in reading earlier installments of this series ("Sail of Stone" is the 6th in the Inspector Winter series).
