review 1: The rock and the river is an historical fiction book for ages 11-14. It takes place in Chicago, 1968. Sam, the main character, is torn between his father; a famous civil rights activist named Roland Childs, and his brother; a proud member of the black panthers. I really liked how the book touched on serious issues like family and beliefs. If you enjoy books that have an historical background as well as an engaging plot, this will be the book for you
review 2: The year is 1968 in Chicago, and 13 year-old Sam Childs finds himself in the midst of the swirling events and changes in the Civil Rights movement. Sam's father, Roland Childs is a Civil Rights lawyer and activist who provokes the fury of those opposed to the movement, despite the non-violent message prea... moreched by Roland and Dr. King. Sam's older brother, Stick, is becoming disenchanted with the movement as he watches activists get beaten and arrested. Like the Civil Rights movement, the Childs family becomes split with Roland continuing with King's pacifist message and Stick choosing the more aggressive tactics of the newly formed Black Panthers. Poor Sam is left to make some tough choices in trying to figure out whose way is best in helping his neighborhood move forward. Author Kekla Magoon weaves the history of this tumultuous year into an excellent story. Through Sam, young readers are introduced to the two sides of the Civil Rights movement, but are left to decide for themselves which way is the answer. less
