review 1: This was one of the most interesting and truly unique MG fiction books I've read in a long time, and 3/4 of it had my neck prickling in anticipation of the next chapter. The final 1/4 had me wanting to shake the thing until all the answers fluttered out, and then slap it for good measure for acting so bloody coy. :P It lost a bit of traction at the end, I think, and I was left with lots of questions. That said, this book fascinated me with it's rich world and unique mystery in a way that I haven't been drawn in for quite some time.
review 2: The Mostly True Story of Jack is a creepy ghost story with a surprisingly complex plot. Jack always felt like a misfit in his own family. He felt invisible among his successful ambitious parents and older brother. When his
... moremother sends him across the country to spend the summer out in the middle of no where with relatives he has never met, Jack feels even more alone and lonely. If that were not bad enough, the tiny town, and his relatives, seem to be uncomfortable with his arrival. He gets strange looks and befuddling comments. Even the house where he is staying seems to be upset. Written in the style and tone of a folk tale, The Mostly True Story of Jack will keep readers guessing about what is really going on. Why are his new friends nervous to be around him? Why is the powerful town tyrant out to get him? Why does the house shudder and moan when he walks to his room? Why don't his phone calls to his mother go through? Author, Kelly Barnhill, does a beautiful job of tying the many plot elements together in a beautiful climax and resolution. Like most good folk tales, the ending is just a tad ambiguous and eerie. less
