review 1: Introducing a dismal totalitarian dystopia through the eyes of a naive but brightly inquisitive protagonist, Fforde miraculously manages to wrap a deeply disturbing and philosophical book in frothy silliness and humor. What could have been ponderous and impenetrable is instead funny and accessible and entertaining even as it bites and cuts and shocks. I'm excited to see that Fforde anticipates a sequel to take us a little farther down the road.
review 2: The Story was Horrible, writing average and overall the book compelled me to write an unsatisfactory review. First of all, I started to believe in Jack when I was first introduced to him. He reminded that there was potential for greatness and it is why I went ahead completing the book. Nobody tells him anythi
... moreng about who he is. His Aunt and Uncle give him a book to read. Along with some annnoying pets who are very smart almost like they had a human brain. I don't understand this part. What kind of town is this? Why are the cats there? Why do they protect him? And the Parrot bugged me also. Parrot's function in the book was totally a filler. So I am reading pages over pages trying to find the ultimate purpose of his arrival only to find him with a bunch of other kids who happen to like Jack. They go on trespassing everywhere and end up searching for each other which is truly the story itself. It's about friendship and not any sort of magic. There is some paranormal things going on and I don't want to disclose those. I found the latter to be extremely boring. Souls, underground, live house, exchanging babies and bullies freaked out and at the mercy of our Protagonists, all seemed so disconnected. There was no logical explanation of how these were apparantly put in the story. There was one brief moment where I was told about Jack but I was expecting some elders who were magical veterans to clearly tell me in a chapter just what the hell is going on. This part just pissed me off, don't keep me in suspense till the end.Anyways, I don't recommend this book because the story disappointed me in many ways. The ending sucked which was quite predictable. Just didn't feel like the book gave a punch. less

I got pretty confused in this book. I liked the side characters WAY more than the main one.
