review 1: I grabbed this book from the library after learning it from a friend, and it was a decent read and quick read. I like the idea of the story and it is pretty intriguing to follow Jack from a barely unnoticeable being to someone special. However, this book have a few cons. I personally felt the stories advances too quickly, one chapter talked about people noticing Jack's future arrival, and in the next, Jack is already there meeting his Aunt and Uncle. Also, the book is somewhat predictable, I can see a lot of foreshadowing and often guessed the next events of the story. Overall, this is an okay story, maybe not great, but sure can be a relaxing time-killer.
review 2: When 13 year-old Jack is sent to live with his kooky relatives in Hazelwood, Iowa, strange ... morethings start to happen. Jack makes his first friends, the town bully beats him up and Mr. Avery wants him dead. All his life he has been practically invisible but in this town he definitely is not. The town has magical eruption centers, children disappear and then are forgotten and an angry Lady is starting to wake up in the earth, to demand what is hers.This was an interesting read as the concept was creative and unique. It deals with friendship, belonging, sacrifice and natural world magic. My only complaint is that I had a hard time actually visualizing the magical parts and found it a bit confusing. It is a scary, fantasy mystery so I think older middle-school kids would be a good audience for this story. less
