review 1: This enchanting story contains some fairy tale tropes, but does not slavishly follow them, and breaks the rules so subtly and organically that you hardly even notice the rule being broken. The story deals with grief and loss in a way that is true and raw, and does not at all condescend to the young audience for whom it is intended. I could go on and on, but if you like fairy-tale-ish stories with a profound emotional core, you will love this book!
review 2: This is Kelly's third novel, and while I love every one of her books, this is my favorite. The language! The stakes! The heartbreaking ingenuity of the world and the characters and plot twists! I'm terrible at writing critical reviews, but I'm a good reader.
