review 1: ***i recieved this book via goodreads first reads. Not at all what I expected. When I first received this in the mail I wasn't sure I would want anything to do with it past the intro. The author begins this stating that we will unexpectedly sympathize with the characters in this book. I has just finished the first of six stories in the book and am surprised to find I am in fact sympathetic. I still found the beginning of the book hard to get through as the author started off sounding pompous and dry. As I read further it did begin to interest me more. like many people reading this book the title did not inspire me to open the cover. i assure you that the book is really better than it looks and the author shows a look into a world most of us wouldnt consider. while not the ... moremost awe inspiring account of historical tragedy it is a decent thought provoking peace accounting the turmoil and many different faces of the nameless terrorists we so fear
review 2: Not only is this book heartwarming, insightful, and inspiring, it brilliantly illustrates the power of empathy and understanding in difficult situations of conflict. Ballen's book elegantly humanizes people dehumanized by war, the media and the distance that prevents us from learning about the places his interviewees come from, physically, psychologically and spiritually. It's a book for the curious, the hopeful, the empathic. less
