review 1: Definitely not my favorite Follett book. It was really engrossing initially but then half way through started to drag. A lot of the war scenes were surprising kind of boring and I skimmed through many of the overly detailed political discussions, which I suppose some people could be into, but it was a little much for me. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed the connections between all of them. I even enjoyed learning about WWI. However this was not nearly as good as Pillars of the Earth.
review 2: This huge, sprawling historical novel which deals with World War I is a pleasure to read. Focusing on several individuals from a variety of social classes from five different countries, Follett manages to depict the characters well enough to ensure one's
... moreinterest in following them--and their often coincidental relationships with each other--through the world events in which they play their parts. Follett is positively masterful in explaining the complicated reasons for what was called the Great War, its cruel follies and even crueller leaders, some of its key battles and background negotiations--all in a very absorbing and interesting way. This book is the first of a trilogy. The second volume deals with World War II. I highly recommend this one as an easy way to learn or refresh one's memory about World War I. less
