review 1: Though I agree with many of the other reviewers that this book needed further editing - there are places where it falls slightly flat, and others where you are pulled away from the story by issues with the writing - I enjoyed it very much. The realism of this near-future dystopia, and the normalcy of it all, is what, in my opinion, give the book its charm. I found the ending unsatisfying, which is my primary reason for giving three, not four stars - three and a half would be more accurate.
review 2: Disturbingly close to the bone. This dystopia is chilling because we are so close to it. My buttons got pushed reading this: so few science-fiction authors deal with family, and anything with parents and young children where you are not certain that everything will ... morebe okay makes me anxious. Then there is the cold mirror of state sanctioned torture and the surveillance state where no-one questions a life under camera and microphones. Like Macleod's Execution Channel it is hard not to finish it without feeling both angry and scared - not only of / at the future, but of the now. I can't help but think that Today's government would behave like this if they had the technology. less
