review 1: One is often tempted, when given the opportunity to write a review of a book or series, to trot out a witty observation or comparison that will garner some attention. However, this title and the two titles that preceded it only left me disappointed. Sure, Oppel writes a good story and the plots have some good continuity, but it presented no surprises. If the goal was to sell books, then that seems to have ben reached based on the reviews on this site and what was in the e-reader editions. Other than that, all I can offer as a positive comment is that I am thankful for the public library system in my town and state. It saved me from having deep regrets if I had to purchase this series instead of borrowing it from the library .
review 2: Starclimber is one o
... moref the most gripping books I’ve read in a while. After the first few chapters, I couldn’t put the book down. There’s this suspense that courses through the book. It makes excellent use of it setting and the characters were interesting. I also like how the book generally strayed from the conventions that dominate many books today. The main character isn’t a “chosen” one, there aren’t supernatural beings, and no soppy romance. While there is a romance in the book, it’s believable and relatable. There were however, a few things that caught me off guard, the book takes place in a fictional timeline in the past, which I suppose I should have known had I read the first two books of the series. However, for the most part, Starclimber works as a standalone book. less
