review 1: This is a terrific story, told from the perspective of a little dog whose owner is also the king's cook. When they get a new king (presumably the old king dies), the cook goes out of his way to prepare scrumptious meals. But as the new king is a little boy, he is picky and hard to please. What will the cook do? To what lengths will he go to please the little despot? This is a fun, and somewhat silly tale and we enjoyed it immensely. The illustrations are marvelous, too!new word: syllabub
review 2: I love books about foods for story times, even though this one may make the kids hungry (it did me). The Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher illustrations are wonderful. I don't know how I missed this one when it came out in 2007, but I'm glad I found it now. Kids

(Pizza: Is it Italian?)(Tacos: I think they are from Mexico). I'm sad the author is Canadian and thus not eligible for the CCBA. However the illustrators Live in California. However, I think 2007 is too old anyway. Perhaps it would be OK since the edition I saw was copyright 2009. Even if it's not a CCBA I still very much like it. less

Loved the artwork more than the storyline. The recipe collage art was fantastic.
