review 1: Quite frankly, young Victor Frankenstein ANNOYS me. He is infuriating, selfish, dragging friends into his quest for glory and to impress Elizabeth, who explicitly states that she isn't interested in him. I don't hate him. I just... don't like him. A lot. Which is fine, because flawed Gothic characters are cool. But I don't like him.I unreservedly adore Elizabeth.The writing isn't bad, the plot is quite good, and it's delving into the backstory of one of fiction's most well-known characters, so it's certainly not bad. It's interesting! And there are fascinating political dynamics. But it also... I don't know. This is neither a glowing review nor a dismal one.
review 2: I devoured this book, sure it took me 5 days to read which is a long time but I really only re... moread on 2 of those 5 days. The book was interesting and it is easy to picture as a prequel. Overall the first few adventures were mediocre, just exciting enough to keep you interested but not enough to put you on the edge of your seat. It was the last little bit of the book where things got really exciting and left you curious to read the sequel. I should say the twist is rather predictable in hindsight...I should have seen it coming; but I didn't. Maybe I did see it coming but just didn't want it to be true so I convinced myself otherwise. The highlight of the whole novel is Victor, whom I adored. Reading about his struggles with his emotions and his sense of right and wrong was intriguing; he was well written and I loved seeing his growth throughout the novel, it is him in combination with the excitement near the end of the novel that really makes me want to continue on with the story. I am looking forward to seeing Victors further development in Such Wicked Intent. less
