The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein
review 1: It must have been fun for Oppel to write his one and only bad boy! It was fun for me to read. But given my last review of one of his stories, I may as well switch things up and complain about his bad habits here.1. A languishing, absent or otherwise invisible mother.2. One meaningful, speaking female character, who never ever talks to another woman. I can't help but feel that the conflicts and rivalries of this story would have dissolved if the Frankensteins had just imported a few more ladies, and maybe given them some lines. Two lines, even. If your story only functions in a woman-less vacuuum then maybe it is not so solid because we are around half of everybody.3. White people, everywhere, all the time. Admittedly unsurprising in a historical Swiss setting. Even so.4. A... moreppropriating poetry. Okay, this isn't a habit! But it was strange to see Byron's work ascribed to Henry. I wasn't sure if the character Henry was meant to be a plagiarist or if Oppel was just winking at us. Stop winking at us, Oppel! But obviously I liked it all the same and will keep reading his work indefinitely.
review 2: 6-29-20143.5 starsThe second book of The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein by Kenneth Oppel closely resembles the first installment of the series. Young Victor once again stumbles through supernatural encounters in search of resurrecting power. A quick read, this novel was entertaining, even giving several references to Mary Shelley's original work (dog sledding at the pole and the oak tree set ablaze by lightning). I deem it worthy of a recommendation if one is looking for a competently-written YA tale for a summer afternoon. less
