review 1: Old bear is reminiscing on the days when he was a cub. He goes back to the seasons when he is a cub, he goes back to the energy he had when he was just a cub. His sweet dreams are all filled with his sweet memories from the past. When he awakes he realizes something...This is a great story told by Kevin Henkes. The details are insane in this book all the shading, sketching, and painting really show. You can tell the illustrator put lots of effort into the drawings and kept them very bright and happy, this keeps the mood very happy. He also puts all of his text in bold font so the text stands out just as much as the illustrations do. This is a really cute read and the illustrations go into vast detail really keeping the reader engaged in whats going on. Trust me you will wa... morent to turn the page as fast as you can to see what will be going on next with Old Bear. This book is really cute and fun to read with the younger ones and even the older ones to remind them the past is just as good as the present.
review 2: Kevin Henkes does a wonderful job of showing Old bear experiencing hibernation for the first time. In this book, the reader goes through all of the dreams of Old Bear during his hibernation. Within these dreams, the reader sees how Old Bear’s imagination fuels what he sees. For example, during summer a daisy is the sun and it was raining blueberries. It is endearing to see these different ideas represent what we know. He longs for being awake and a part of the world. We see his idea of spring, summer, autumn and his idea of what winter looks like. Complementing the text are beautiful illustrations. Henkes really plays with the idea of color in his illustrations of Old Bear’s dreams. For autumn, Henkes uses an abundance of reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. There are also leaves everywhere that have changed color and all of the fish in the river, migrating. During summer, Henkes uses an abundance of green in the illustrations along with flowers and lots of butterflies. These illustrations pull together all of the different elements that are recognizable with the different seasons. less
