review 1: Of course I picked up this book because I'm a Rush fan. Guess what: I was disappointed. Many characters seemed so underdeveloped to me - what's the fun of reading fiction if they are not complex or ambiguous enough to keep you hooked on the attempt to flesh them out? Owen looks as stereotyped and predictable as the protagonist of a bad book written by an immature teenager. I understand Owen is supposed to be naive. But does naive have to mean boring as well? On the positive side, I liked the way the Watchmaker and the Anarchist were portrayed. While the first was not exactly a villain, the second was far from being a hero. The story is fast-paced - VERY fast-paced. So fast that the reader doesn't even have time to enjoy some important developments. It almost looks like the a... moreuthor had a page limit and was simply forced to squeeze in it the whole plot delineated by Neil Peart. Of course the page limit didn't exist. The book is actually not that long. Maybe the author just had to rush (no pun intended) because he needs to keep his high average of book releases per year, who knows?I would rate the book lower if it weren't for the concept of the Albion land and the Watchmaker, which are interesting and had lots of potential. It also scores points because it finally made me understand the crazy lyrics of the (very good) Clockwork Angels album. To conclude, I must warn you that the author's writing underdelivers. As an example, this was the "OK, that does it" moment for me on that front:“When Owen awakened, he was very much surprised to find himself still alive – which should have been no surprise; otherwise he wouldn’t have awakened in the first place.”
review 2: In no more then two days I fell in love with this book. I probably would have finished it in one sitting if I had the chance. The book is amazing. Very deep and very enjoyable. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The end by Neal Peart is true to his style and I feel him throughout the tale. I think this would be a fantastic young adult novel that one could come back to as an adult and find the deeper enjoyment that I found. I will read this again. An added bonus is if you are a fan of the band RUSH and know the lyrics. It is not necessary to understand the book, but does give great deeper context to some songs and especially the latest album of the same name. Enjoy! less

An interesting read. Fun book. Good for teens, and cool because of the Rush/Neil Peart connection.

Rush fans will enjoy this book; readers who aren't Rush fans might not see the point.
