The Saga of Shadows
review 1: This guy is a prolific writer. I imagine he writes a thousand page novel before breakfast. I love that I can pick up one of his books and know that it is going to be a solid read. The Dark Between the Stars continues the story that was laid out in the Saga of the Seven Suns. In that series, humanity battled bitter enemies from the hearts of stars, and malevolent robots created by an alien race. The cast of human and alien heroes is back, but this time they face a much darker enemy - an entropic, inky blackness that oozes out of cracks in the universe, seeking to destroy all life. At the same time, a deadly plague is released that could decimate humanity. Will the quest for inexpensive starship fuel eliminate humanity's best chance to stop the intruders? Will humanity's anci... moreent enemies become allies against this inimitable foe? Will old allies become corrupted by the darkness? Kevin Anderson keeps us guessing. Anderson's character development is awesome. Characters come to life quickly. Anderson's action sequences are fun to read and drive the plot forward at a rapid pace. Anderson's technology is innovative, but also very grounded in reality, making it easy to visualize this future. There are cliff-hangers, plot twists and a universe of characters that interact in unexpected ways. This is a good read on its own, even more fun if you read some of the previous series.
review 2: I have not read the Saga of the Seven Suns. Perhaps doing so would positively influence my review. As it were, I have heard of that saga, and saw in the jacket that this book is a 'stand-alone.'In my own reading, I find that I cannot grasp and do not get as attached to books and characters when so many are introduced. In the first 15 chapters of the book, 13 characters are introduced with 13 different view points. I just found it a bit overwhelming and then just didn't end up caring what happened to anyone.I can honestly say I have no idea what is happening in the book. less

Fun space opera that moved fast. I did not read the prior series and had no problems jumping in.

A fairly good continuation of the Saga of the 7 Suns.
