review 1: Faris and Boro are my new favorite characters. Damaged but not broken, generous of heart and spirit, struggling to make the best they can of the cards life has dealt them... what's not to love. The world-building was just as captivating. It's wonderful to feel myself inside the landscape of a book. When I find that, I'm a happy camper.This book is nominally a historical, though for me it read more like a gentle fantasy. The magic is that of the soul and, perhaps, a bit of karma. The story asks you to take a journey through its characters and what happens when their lives intersect. I loved it all, including the secondary characters. But most of all I loved the story's optimism and sense of hope, its belief that while humans are often nasty pieces of work most are inherentl... morey good.I recommend this story to readers who love stories about healing, men with sweet souls, lovers who endure against odds, medieval settings, and happy endings.
review 2: Learning Faris and Boro's story will leave you heart broken, but watching them find love together will mend it. These two men are both strong and yet they are also the gentlest of men. I fell in love with them both. The Pillar is a cruel punishment, I was kinda hoping to see it torn down, but I could also think of a few people, real and imaginary, that I would be happy to see tied to it. If I'd had my way the ending would have been different, I'm not as big a man as Faris shows himself to be. In fact I was all set to rant over the ending, until I heard Faris and his reasoning’s.A hard tale to read, but worth it. less
