review 1: I loved this book!! I could barely put my Kindle down for reading it. I liked Miss Amsel's spunk when she stood up for what she believed in. Right, wrong or indifferent sometimes though. I loved the boys, Robert and Johnny Townsend. I did think she was being a bit inconsiderate to Joel Townsend, though. Telling him that she really didn't want a ready-made family even though she had feelings for him. Though I feel where she is going with that though. But like all good romance stories, this one played out just right. LOVED IT!!!
review 2: Every once in a while I think I want to read a book that really doesn't require much thought. Courting Miss Amsel definitely falls into this category. The book is one of those typical of the "Amish" genre, complete with the ima
... morege of the pretty pensive-looking young woman on the cover gazing into the distance at a handsome young man who presumably is her husband or husband-to-be. Edythe Amsel is an 'old-maid' school teacher (being 28 years old and unmarried) teaching in a one-room school house on the prairie. She boards with an older, matronly character and is courted by the various single men in the small praire town. There is little historical about the book (if anything I came across some obvious historical inaccuracies, like a child eating an orange in the middle-of-nowhere Nebraska in September). Books like this are very predictable and often dosed with Christian morality. I might recommend this book to my grandmother or to a 12-year old enamored of Little House on the Prairie, but not to anyone interested in digging their teeth into a good historical novel. less
