review 1: This is the first time I have read a book by this author. I was given this book by a friend who is a fan. It was very interesting and kept my attention. With the turn of every page I wanted to help Jillian, solve all of her problems, and help this slay her life's demon. This story is very realistic even though we hope these things don't happen behind closed doors. I will definitely read another book by Ms. Lawson-Roby
review 2: I'm not going to rate this book with any stars. It's not that I didn't like it; I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I got to chapter 5 then skipped over to the epilogue. The tone of the book is written from a 12 year old's point of view, and I felt like I was reading the thoughts of a twelve year old. That's good that the... more author can portray this voice BUT the main character is being sexually abused by her stepfather. I was so completely uncomfortable reading the scenes where he was coercing and threatening her. I could feel the dread and fear whenever he came in her room. The scenes are graphically described in a way that is very cut and dry, and it just made me feel dirty. I just wanted to cry with Jill (main character) and swoop in and punch her stepdad in the nuts and save her.Overall, this is a book that is well written as it really captures the main characters voice, but I didn't read enough of it to form an opinion about how much I actually LIKED it. If it means anything, I would definitely recommend to younger girls and to keep on the shelves of sexual abuse outreach offices. less
