review 1: This is the second Kimberla lawson Roby book that I have read and unfortunately, I started with the follow up book Be careful what you pray for, and then I read this one. I thought it was very well written, it kept my attention. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Now I would love to go back and read all about Rev. Curtis Black and definately looking forward to any new books coming out. Ms. Alicia is definately a piece of work and her character made me so mad!
review 2: I normally like Kimberla Roby - I've read all of the Curtis Black books so far - but this one just barely gets two stars from me. By the end I was ready to pull my hair out because of the characters and their contradictions. I won't re-state the plot - it's as stated on the book jack
... moreet - but Roby does so much "preaching" that it just ruined it for me. She tackles shopping addictions, black folk who don't go to the doctor, affairs, high living drug dealers, folk who are scared to commit to marriage - and the characters all have problems/issues that made me not like them at all, but not in an "this bad guy's character is so well written that I really hate him" way; in an "I can't believe she wrote this" way. I struggled to finish this, and probably only did so because it was an audiobook and I couldn't skip ahead to the end. There will probably be a follow-up, as she didn't close it out completely. less
