review 1: I'd be remiss to give Kresley Cole's book any lower rating than 5. So...it is a five. This is Regin and Chase's story. It begins when Regin meets Aidan, the original lover. She asks for help as she ran out of provision in her quest to save Lucia. He immediately recognizes his mate and makes her promise that she will be true to him as he will be true to her. Nine years pass and they reunite, however, Aidan takes it slow, wanting to claim her only when he is immortal. In order to do this, he must win two hundred battles in Woden's name. However, after a particularly gruelling battle, he is pushed to the edge fearing that he will die before he even knows Regin. He makes love to her that night. Soon after, he dies by the hands of a vampire assassin who followed him after the b... moreattle. In his death, he swears that nothing will keep him from Regin. And so, he starts a series of reincarnations, all a variation of his personality and all devoted to Regin. Regin, as an immortal, has seen the different manifestations of Aidan. Her reactions has swung from elation to utter despair as a pattern forms with each reincarnation. As soon as they make love to her and gain her kiss, they remember their past life and meet with an untimely death soon after. After the last one, Regin swore to herself that she will stay away so that the next form will live a happy and full life without her. Fate has other plans however...She is sent by Nix to dispatch a group of men, who turned out to be Chase's. They try to capture her but only succeeded when Chase intervened. He was supposed to kill the valkyrie but found that he cannot. He is unsettled by the fact that she looked betrayed when he twisted the knife. She is captured and brought back to the base. There she is interrogated and is quite torn on whether to bring about Aidan's death. She wants Aidan but she cannot bring herself to start his reincarnation's death. However, with each cruelty she suffers, she becomes more determined. The last straw came when Thad, the sweet just turned seventeen highschool football player was dragged away to be examined. He came back tortured. This, after she extracted a promise of protection for her little group.They start a private meeting where he tries to glean more information and she tries to seduce him, in order to give him that kiss, the kiss that will restore his memories and trigger the accidents. However, she backs off at the last minute and they are interrupted by Webb, who reveals Regin's plan and puts a wedge between them. The wedge only grow bigger as Webb contrived a plan to keep Chase away while making it look like he orchestrated Regin's vivisection. Chase came back early but he was drugged out and could not come to Regin's rescue when she needed him the most. When he finally accepts that he is a berserker, he figures out that Regin is his woman. However, by this time, Regin may have given up on him. Regin came out altered after the torture. Her light was dimmed and she suffered a blow to her pride. She begged for mercy and got none. She felt betrayed by Chase and she finally gave up on him, thinking that he ordered it. She felt resolved in her decision to kill him. At this time, La Dorada came in looking for her ring. She freed the Pravis while keeping the Vertas locked. Chaos ensued in the facility as Chase tries to keep the self destruct sequence from blowing up. Giving up on that, he settled on saving Regin. Regin is knocked unconscious by a group of vampire seeking revenge. She escapes with Brandr's, Natalya, Thad, and Lothaire's help. This motley crew hides out for a few days when the boat will be available. Chase tries to gain their favour with the promise of safety. However, Regin is reluctant not only because of the evil deeds Chase committed but also that when she softens up to him, he will inevitably die. The plot is driven by Lothaire's self interest, which is to extract as many favours as possible. He brings Chase and Regin together since he has a hold on Chase, who promised him anything in order to save Regin. Lothaire betrays him to the Pravis camp, which turned out to be a favour as it became the two hundredth battle that earned him his immortality. Regin and Chase make love that night and when Regin awoke, she realized what a mistake she had. She tries to extract a promise from Chase that he won't come back the next time for her. However, they are soon interrupted by attacks all around. In the chaos, Malkom acting on Carrow's behalf when she promised Regin she would see to Chase's death, cut Chase with his sword. It was a death blow and in a heartwrenching scene, Chase promised Regin he will see to Regin's wishes and no longer return for her. Regin retracts her words and says he must come back. Regin is desperate to have him in any way or form. He asks Lothaire to transform him into a vampire, which ultimately was not needed because unbeknownst to them, Chase was already an immortal Berserker. They returned to Val Hall where Regin waits patiently for Chase to awaken. She begs Woden for this one favour and he delivered. Chase woke up and they lived happily ever after. I loved the story. I loved the idea of reincarnation and finding your love across different ages. Your body might find different forms but when your soul recognizes your half, it just knows. Although Chase is physically different from the blonde perfect viking that is Aidan, he still has parts of his intense obsession. He is very stubborn and grew to be his own person through the trials that he endured. He was tortured by the Neoptera and grew to despise immortals, believing them to be the epitome of evil. This blinded him to what his heart already recognized, which is the path that was leading him straight to Regin. Regin, although in all accounts is abrasive and obnoxious, is actually sweet in her own way. She is loyal and devoid of malice. She is strong and brave and very likable. A little part of her dies whenever she meets the reincarnations and loses them shortly thereafter. She believes herself to be the curse to Aidan's forms when she is the one cursed to lose her lovers. She stayed true to one person throughout her life. The one that stole the show from me is Lothaire though. Even though he commits very selfish acts, he still has his charms. The lessons he gave to Thad about sifting only to spy was hilarious. He is so guilelessly evil that it is so funny. He professes to spying on one of Regin and Chase's intimate moments and does so objectively, only to make sure that he has a hold on the valkyries through Chase's connection to him. Even though Regin and Chase have spent hundreds of years on this romance, Lothaire only cares about it so that it can serve his purpose. He is so blatant with his selfishness that I just can't help but smile. Thad is a naive sweetheart. Malkom is very sweet too. Brandr too is sweet, in his loyal ways. He carried out his vow throughout the years.Overall, I really liked this book. I have been looking forward to Regin's and I would have loved the book more had I not expected a dynamite of a story. I thought they could have played with Regin's light dimming a little more. The vivisection, although harsh on Regin, did dig a big hole for Chase to come out of. Overall, I think this is another solid book by Kresley. Now off to reread Lothaire~
review 2: I keep thinking that every book I read in this series is the best and then the next comes along and it seems to get better and better! Had a hard time caring for Declan for a while, but as always, loved him at the end. My real love of this story though was Thad! Can't wait for more of him.As always, this book was made even better by the narration of Robert Petkoff. He brings such life to the characters that it is a joy to listen to his rendition. less
