A Domestic Diva Mystery
review 1: Another enjoyable read in this series.Sophie Winston learns that her recently deceased, reclusive neighbor has stipulated in his will that she host a Bequest Party, where certain people who have been invited will receive a final gift from him. He has left the estate to his dog too - if they can find her.The local design guild decides to use the deceased's house as a Designer Showcase house, which will also renovate the place so it can be sold. Things seem to be underway somewhat smoothly until Sophie finds the body of one of the designers who was also receiving a bequest dead in the house. When the police arrive to investigate, the body has disappeared! It was fun seeing how it would all be resolved.
review 2: It's Valentine's Day in Old Town Alexandria, and
... moreSophie Winston is busy running the local home & garden show at the convention center. When her rival Natascha decides to turn their recently deceased neighbor's home into a show house for the local design guild -- Sophie gets roped in as well as her ex-husband and friends. Things get even weirder when Sophie thinks she found a dead body in the show home, but the body disappears before she can report it… and then the young female cop investigating the disappearing body ends up murdered at the convention center. Sophie's love life is just as confusing when she finds out that the detective she's been dating was also romantically linked to the murdered officer!Fortunately, Sophie is able to take a break from all the stress when the late home owner charges her with a task to host his "bequest" party. Five students of the late professor are to each receive a puzzle piece, key, and a bottle of wine… clues to their real bequest. While the show home is renovated, the former students hunt around every nook & cranny to figure out the puzzle to find their inheritances. This was actually my favorite installment in the Domestic Diva series so far. The two books previous were too similar and weren't as well developed as this one. Both the main plot of solving the murder & disappearance were strong, as well as the sub story about the late professor and his tarnished past. The narration was definitely much better, gone were the annoying & unnecessary details from the first novels… like wether or not the food is organic. The new characters for this plot, specifically the Design Guild members, were a bit over the top and not very believable. But… they weren't over the top enough to lose a star for the book, their roles were so minor in the story that it was just a minor annoyance. The original & reoccurring characters were strengthened in the novel, I especially loved learning more about Francine and what the neighborhood was like during her younger years. All in all - a very enjoyable read! I have only strong praises, no strong complaints! less
