As a former police inspector, Winston has intelligence and logic on his side. But it will take the strength of Poppy's love for him to defeat the forces that threaten to tear them apart" (From Amazon)I love Poppy and WInston as a couple and as individual characters. I have been waiting to read this novel since Firelight and it did not disappoint. I am loving this historical paranormal romance novel as the suspense is amazing as well.
review 2: Another great installment in the Darkest London series. This book follows the eldest Ellis sister, Poppy Anne Lane, as she struggles to balance her SOS duties, her family's new found knowledge of her identity, and a crumbling marriage to her husband Winston. With her world and powers newly revealed him, Winston Lane is left recovering from the his near-fatal accident and the supernatural truths his wife hid. But when Winston is threatened and bodies begin piling up, Poppy is forced to team up with her estranged husband and discover the culprit and killer before time runs out for them and their marriage. This book had everything I love about the series: good action, startling secrets, fantastic magic, and a great relationship and romance to frame it all with. Callihan structures the story by alternating between current and past events. We know how and why Winston and Poppy fell apart, but these flashbacks tell how they came together. And when juxtaposed with the current events, they also tell how and why the pair will come back to each other. Poppy and Winston share a lot of the same qualities: smart, kickass loyal to a fault, devoted to each other, and fiercely independent. Needless to say, these strong similarities lead to some friction in their relationship. Poppy is tirelessly dedicated to her SOS position, but slowly realizes that this devotion could cost her everything she values in her life. She also worries that her position of authority and self-reliance could make her less attractive and desirable to Win. Winston, in turn, is stung by his wife's betrayal and questions if he truly knew or understood her. As he adjusts to her powers and position, he wonders if he can find a place by her side and in her heart. They’re formidable separately, but like all great couples they’re even stronger and smarter together.Magical skirmishes pepper the story and we get a neat look at Poppy’s combat and magical abilities. She’s no slouch when it comes to physically battling the undead and her icy powers are both creepy and stunning. If you liked Elsa from “Frozen”, chances are you’ll like Poppy. Winston too fends off his share of hellspawn and demonstrates he can hold his own with the supernatural set. This tale isn't as fighting-heavy as previous books but the fisticuffs that do ensure are memorable.Mary Chase and Jack Talent feature a little more in this installment. Callihan delves a little further into their dynamic and creates a neat starting base for her next book. I'm looking forward to the next installment and how their relationship will differ from previous ones. So far, Callihan has done a great job of showcasing different types of relationships and pairings and the stories don’t feel repetitive or stale. Poppy sisters and brothers-in-law make a few appearances, but they're mostly (and rightly) supporting cast this time around. We also get a peak into the structure of the SOS and a little world-building. Like a proto-MI6, the supernatural spy network is based in London and we get a first-hand tour of SOS facilities and the supernaturals who guard and work it. I was really intrigued by this literal underground network and I hope we get more glimpses of it in the next book. An espionage romance would be a great variation on this theme with plenty to work with. Poppy also drops a major revelation for the Ellis sisters and co. This will definitely has potential for future books and I can't wait to see how the reveal further expands the world.Overall, a really great and fast read with lots of action, heart, and sexy times. Definitely a must-read for fans of the series. less
