review 1: One of the reviews here on Goodreads mentions that one of the things that characterizes Scandinavian crime fiction is that it is usually about ordinary crimes committed by ordinary people compared to the American crime novels where the murders are extraordinary - either in the way they are carried out or because of the victim - and the murderers are all psychopatic serial killers and/or rich and powerful. The review also mentions that Kristina Ohlsson in this novel has strayed too far into the American tradition. I fully agree with this observation. The story was too "designed" and not nearly as good as the previous books I've read by the same author.
review 2: This was the last bit of leisure reading I'll get to do for over a month, so I wanted to choose a goo
... mored selection. This didn't disappoint - well not quite. It seems Ohlsson's pattern is to make each plot more intricate and layered than the one before when it comes to this series. Guess I'll know for sure when/if there is a book number four. The evolution of the main characters was solid, yet the complication of the main murder was tightly woven or all over the place depending on your taste. It was a bit of both for me. I don't mind having to think or even remember minute details, but there were some leads that just weren't worth it. Sure that's the experience of the police, but it isn't always a great idea for it to be the experience of the reader. Ohlsson's "Unwanted" was a pure murder mystery and chase of a psychopath. The second in the series was still fast paced, but not as much. And this one sealed the deal on that pattern. I'd still read the fourth book in this series, but I believe rather than a writer messing up her own formula, I believe I may be seeing a writer evolve - one who will write books nothing like this series - which is cool too. less
