review 1: This is straight up women's fiction, and because of that I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Usually a book I read in a couple of days warrants 5 stars just for holding my attention so completely. This one, though highly readable with a compelling plot, had characters just a little too flat, and I was always recognizing how the writing fell short of literary fiction. Still recommended for what it is, an engrossing story of family problems.
review 2: I was not expecting to like this book. I'm not usually a fan of chick lit, even when it's dark & gritty but The Whole Golden World drew me in. I found there were a lot of issues being covered and those topics make for good book club discussions. I liked that each of the main characters were flawed and ther... moree were no "good guys"/ "bad guys". If you are, looking for a happy, feel good read, this book is NOT the one. However, if you are seeking a story which makes you feel and think about how well do I know my kids, spouse, self , then read The Whole Golden World. less
