review 1: As a former music major, I thoroughly enjoyed Acoustic Rooster. It's a great book for introducing jazz to the elementary school crowd (and maybe some older readers.) The rhymes are fun and make for a great read-aloud. The illustrations are enchanting and add to the tone of the book. The jazz glossary, descriptions of jazz era "musicians, characters, and music," and jazz timeline at the end of the book make this book an even better addition to elementary music libraries. I can't wait to share this book with my school's music teacher!
review 2: Fun story about Acoustic Rooster who starts a band for a jazz contest. This one will find a tough time finding a young audience to appreciate the plays on names and songs, but the message will ring true: somtimes, it'... mores finding friends and doing what you love that's more important than winning. There is a timeline and glossary in the back to share jazz history and explain the references in the book. less
