review 1: My first attempt into African Literature and I am impressed.Ghanian Author Kwei Quartey's Protagonist is Darko Dawson and this is the first superb entry in this series.Quartey takes us on a journey through Ghana, it's cities, it's slums and it's villages. I can close me eyes and see what Inspector Dawson sees. Various Ghanian traditions are introduced and explained. The culture, the heritage, the traditions as well as the changes that are challenging all these ancient and time honored articles of 'faith'. The slow changes in the gender roles, the introduction of tighter central government, the presence of the Ominous AIDS epidemic in the background - all provide a lovely backdrop and enrich this murder mystery.The story moves flawlessly even though our hero himself is flaw... moreed (at times). This intriguing story kept me glued to the book all night. I, a very tired and sleep deprived Reader - highly recommend this book.
review 2: I liked this novel much better than another Ghaniain author's Tail of the Blue Bird. Darko Dawson is a police inspector in Accra, who is called to investigate the death of a young female AIDS worker in a village where his mother disappeared many years prior. The author sets up four possible suspects: a young boy, the high priest, the holistic medicine man, and the girl's boss, and does a respectable job integrating modern life with varioud tribal beliefs. There are some good underlying stories, tension among the policemen, and family matters. Will definitely read the other books. less
