review 1: Of the 5 books I read for the Primary Source global mysteries book group, this was the one I was least looking forward to. But I really, really enjoyed it. It was a quick read, and Darko Dawson is a very sweet character. I would be more eager to read other books in this series than for the other detective characters we read throughout the book group, except, perhaps, Cayetano Brule, if more of Roberto Ampuero's books are translated.
review 2: Four of the blurbs on my copy of this book compared it to "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," undoubtedly because they're both set in Africa. This series is much darker and grittier. ... moreide strands were abruptly tied up at the end. Inspector Darko Dawson is a sympathetic antagonist. I'd give it three and a half stars. less
