review 1: If I could have given this book 4.5 stars, I would have. Idleman writes in a way that is relevant, yet penetrating. It should go without saying that anything more important than God has become a god within our lives. Again, it should go without saying. But the issue is we all have things we must put to death. Deep within each of us, we think we know what will make us happy. However, as Idleman points out, unless we worship that which we were created to worship, happiness will never be attained. Whether its pleasure, power, or a misunderstanding of love, those things are often misused. Could the real issue be worship of self? Doesn't all sin exist because of my need to worship created things? So far, this is my favorite of Idleman's works. I say "so far" because I ... morehope there are many to follow. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Read it slowly. If you're honest, you'll be challenged to change. Worship God or worship a god?
review 2: Perhaps the best book I've read this year since "Jesus > Religion" by Jefferson Bethke! Idolatry is a huge topic, and there's no limit to the books being published and written day in and day out in the Christian market about idols. However, this one jumped out at me for its practical use and its awesome writing style. Plastered with down-to-earth illustrations of what idolatry looks like in the modern world (and the occasional useless footnote), Idleman gives a complete picture of what 21st Century idolatry looks like to help us in our self-evaluation. He asks some tough-hitting questions: What do you think about most often? What do you think about first thing in the morning and last thing before falling asleep? What are some of the things that worry your or make you angry? If you can find some object to answer for these questions, then you've probably found your idol. Idleman takes the reader through three "temples" that Americans face today: Pleasure, Power, and Love. He devotes chapters to the idolatrous potential of food, sex, entertainment, money, success, romance, family, and concludes with "self" to summarize and wrap up everything previously said in the book. I would recommend this to any Christian who's looking for something deeply devotional. It will open up your heart for sure. less

Loved this book! It opened my eyes and made me think about the "gods" being put ahead of my God.
